In 1987, after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) ordered the major interstate pipelines to open access to transportation, Panoak discovered that it could cut the cost of gas to municipalities by as much as 60% versus what was being charged by the major pipeline companies. This discovery is what founded the Gas Company within Panoak. The company realized that it could service these small municipalities with natural gas purchased from the major pipelines at market cost and then compete with the same pipeline companies using lower profit margins for pricing. Today Panoak Gas Company still provides these same services, but now markets its own natural gas that it produces on these same major pipelines throughout North America as well.
